Watch cases come in a handful of shapes: round, square, rectangular, tonneau, cushion, octagonal and oval. Round is the default and the simplest to size, because one number describes it. The other shapes change how a watch sits on the wrist, and most are listed as width × height instead of a single diameter.
The shapes at a glance
| Shape | What it looks like | How the size is listed | Sizes in the Watchmond edit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Round | A circle | Diameter, for example 41 mm | 16 to 47 mm |
| Square | Four sides of equal or near-equal length | Width × height, for example 24 × 24 mm | From 18 × 18 to 41 × 41 mm |
| Rectangular | Taller than it is wide | Width × height, for example 20 × 26 mm | From 18 × 24 to 31 × 40 mm |
| Tonneau | A barrel: the sides bow outward | Width × height, for example 41 × 50 mm | From 22 × 23 to 43 × 50 mm |
| Cushion | A square with rounded corners and curved sides | One number or width × height, as the maker measures it | 19 to 45 mm |
| Octagonal | Eight sides on the bezel, the case or both | One number or width × height, as the maker measures it | 23 to 45 mm |
| Oval | A stretched circle | Width × height, for example 18 × 26 mm | All women's, 18 × 26 to 18 × 28 mm |
Round
About 6 in 10 of the watches we carry have a round case. Its size is the case diameter, measured across the dial without the crown, and it is listed in the specifications on the product page. Round cases run from 16 mm on our ring watches to 47 mm on the largest men's watches.
Square and rectangular
A square case has four sides of equal or near-equal length; a rectangular case is taller than it is wide. Both shapes are listed as width × height, so a "20 × 26 mm" case is 20 mm across and 26 mm from top to bottom.
A rectangular case runs along the wrist, so it often wears smaller than its length suggests. In our edit both shapes are mostly women's watches. Browse them in Square & Rectangular Watches.
Tonneau
Tonneau is French for barrel. The sides bow outward, so the case is wider in the middle than at its ends. Most of our tonneau watches are men's, among them automatic models with skeleton dials at 41 × 50 mm.
Cushion
A cushion case is a square with rounded corners and softly curved sides, like a pillow seen from above. It sits between round and square: it shows corners without hard edges. We carry it on women's and men's watches, quartz and automatic.
Octagonal
An octagonal watch has eight sides. We list a watch as octagonal when its bezel or its case has eight sides, even if the other part is round. We carry it on women's and men's quartz watches.
Oval
An oval case is a stretched circle, taller than it is wide. Every oval watch we carry is a women's watch, 18 mm wide and 26 to 28 mm tall.
How we record the shape
We record the shape you see from the front, read from the photos of every model, and every color of a model carries the same shape. A round bezel on a barrel-shaped case counts as round, because round is what you see on the wrist. The case shape is listed in the specifications of every product page, and every collection can be filtered by it.
Quick answers
What is the most common watch case shape?
Round. About 6 in 10 of the watches we carry have a round case.
What is a tonneau watch?
A watch with a barrel-shaped case: the sides curve outward, so the case is wider in the middle than at the top and bottom.
Which shape suits a small wrist?
Rectangular and oval cases run along the wrist, so they often wear smaller than their length suggests. Check both numbers, width and height, against your wrist; our Watch Size Guide shows how to measure.
